The examination of the electoral law is postponed. The issue of preferences remains

The examination in the Chamber of Deputies has been postponed to 14 July electoral law. A postponement of a week which, officially, is motivated by the government with the possible chaos of the trains (a strike and work on a railway line) and with the appointment in Naples of the centre-left on the programme.

For the opposition, which confirms “the wall” against the centre-right reform, the shift is instead dictated by problems within the majority, (“It seems to me that the discomfort is in the majority more than anything else. An entirely political and not infrastructural discomfort”, he observes for example Riccardo Magi), starting from the node of preferencesthat yesterday’s Sherpa meeting FdI, FI, Lega e We moderates it did not dissolve.

The node of preferences and the role of leaders

So much so that – as already happened during the drafting of the text and the subsequent majority agreement – there are already those who postpone the moment in which the skein will be unraveled to a direct confrontation between the leaders, which is not currently scheduled. Yet it is the leaders themselves who declassify the issue at technical tables: “All the technicians are working”, the deputy prime minister cuts short Antonio Tajani. Idem Matteo Salvini: “I don’t take part in meetings, I’m not at the tables, there are technicians who are taking care of it.”

The positions of the government parties on the electoral law

The extra week of time could facilitate a solution, even if on the issue of preferences the critical issues already expressed several times by both Forza Italia and Lega remain. “This electoral law was born from an agreement between the majority parties, it is a law that was requested primarily from FdI and Meloni, in the name of stability”. “By virtue of this majority agreement we have accepted the reform of the electoral law but now other pieces cannot be called into question. Our position is this: this text is already born from a compromise, always doing the plus one creates difficulties”, says the Northern League group leader clearly Riccardo Molinari.

FdI does not back down on preferences

In FdI we insist on preferences, remembering that this is a historic battle for the party and, according to what several parliamentarians report, the prime minister’s line remains firm on this point.

But, at the same time, there are those in the centre-right who do not exclude the possibility that, in the end, the preferences will not enter the text: the compactness of the coalition comes before everything, in that case it would be the motivation with which to put a stop to it. Moreover, the opposition observe, the secret vote could represent a danger and therefore, it is the belief, in the end “they will backtrack”.

Criticisms from the opposition

Those who have no intention of triggering a U-turn on the battle are the opposition: “On the right they spend their nights meeting in buildings and their days responding to agency blows, always on the same topic, how to protect themselves. The question is simple: when do they think they have the time to deal with Italy? This show has gone on too long. It’s time for them to deal with the country’s real problems”, urges the leader of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein. E Avs he adds: “We understand that the right has a lot of difficulty in finding a ‘square’, because the law that Meloni likes, which we could call Vampirellum, would fall on the allies like a real disaster. Fratelli d’Italia wants to play catch-up, its allies obviously aren’t up for it”.

The minister replies to the dem secretary Luca Ciriani: “Schlein find out what Parliament does, because Parliament is not dealing with electoral law, in fact this week it is dealing with everything except electoral law”.

Vannacci’s lunge

That the electoral reform will ultimately not see the light – as some deputies hypothesize in the Transatlantic councils – says it clearly Roberto Vannacci on social media, attributing the ‘blame’ to his party: “If National future will continue to grow in the polls. Meloni will also strand the new electoral law by renouncing the majority bonus” says the former general.
