Earthquake in Venezuela: over 2,650 deaths, 890 aftershocks

The death toll double earthquake which hit the Venezuela on June 24 it rose to 2.645while the number of injured has reached 12,666, as reported by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez’s brother also published the assessment in a message on Telegram, specifying that around 15,050 people were left homeless and that 86,117 families had received assistance. In his report, he also mentioned 6,462 people rescued and 885 buildings damaged, 189 of which completely collapsed, which led to the creation of 59 temporary shelters.

Following the earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, were recorded 890 aftershocks.

The double earthquake of a week ago is the deadliest that Venezuela has suffered in the last century. Fifty-nine years earlier, in July 1967, an earthquake struck the area near Caracascausing 245 deaths, thousands of injuries and extensive material damage. The earthquakes a week ago hit Caracas and six other northern states.

The most affected region was La Guaira, a coastal area already devastated by a landslide in 1999 which caused thousands of victims. A rapid preliminary assessment by NASA, based on satellite imagery, indicates that the two earthquakes in Venezuela may have damaged or destroyed approximately 58,870 buildings in the affected region.
