“We will never be communists”, Trump denounces attack on US identity

Thirty minutes of speech to denounce “the communist threat, the attack on our identity by internal radicalism” and to celebrate American “exceptionality and power”. Donald Trump thus celebrated the 250th anniversary of the United States, speaking at Mount Rushmore, in South Dakota, under the imposing granite faces depicting George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. A privilege to which he aspires, because it is not enough for him that a federal building in Washington has been named after him, as well as some naval warships, an airport in Palm Beach, Florida, and a new government savings account. But no presidential honor is comparable to having one’s face carved on Mount Rushmore, so much so that the White House, in the past, had moved to evaluate the feasibility of adding the tycoon’s face, although geotechnical investigations have categorically excluded the possibility of expanding the monument, given the fragility of the rock.

Face or no face, the American president last night went to the monument in South Dakota on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States and gave a speech focused on the strength of America, calling the United States “the most powerful country on Earth”. “Tonight we gather on the eve of one of the most extraordinary days in the history of the world. We celebrate 250 years of glorious independence and 250 years of majestic American freedom. There is nothing like it,” he said. “The United States of America is the most successful, most accomplished and exceptional nation that has ever existed in the history of mankind. And it is an honor to be your president.”

As anticipated by the White House, Trump underlined what it means to be Americans: “Show us a mountain and we will climb it. Show us an ocean and we will cross it. Show us a problem and we will solve it. Show us a task that the world defines as impossible and Americans will complete it.” “Tonight, let’s say it clearly and proudly: what makes Americans so unique and extraordinary is that we will restore our country to its identity,” Trump declared. “Above all, Americans love freedom.”

Then the president added: “It is not necessary to be born here, but you must love what we have built, you must love our country.” Reiterating a point he has made often recently, Trump mentioned communists, a label he has applied to several Democratic candidates in the 2026 elections. And he characterized communism as an enemy and a mortal threat to American freedom comparable to 9/11, “the enemy of the Constitution, the enemy of the Fourth of July, 1776.” “Communism is the exact opposite of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is death, tyranny and the pursuit of evil,” he said. “We swear and pledge, for all to hear us, that the citizens of the United States of America will defeat communism from our shores and send it into exile once and for all. America will never be a communist country!” he said.

“Now there is a resurgence of the communist threat in our land, even from newcomers to our country, who embrace ideas totally opposed to our lifestyle and our great success”, the president further denounced. Who then assured: “The best is yet to come” for the United States and listed a long list of results – including those at the Olympics – which, in his opinion, justify American superiority compared to other countries in the world. “For 250 years, the entire world has looked to our country, drawing inspiration from the progress, feats of strength, and acts of selflessness, faith, and hope that could only happen here.”

There was no shortage of references to domestic politics, looking ahead to congressional midterm elections next November: “We can only lose midterm elections if we let ourselves, if we are foolish and stupid and reckless, but if we end the filibuster, as we should, and immediately vote for the Save America Act, we will not lose an election for 100 years.” “We are reaching an unprecedented milestone and we celebrate with jubilant hearts and souls,” Trump claimed, “because after two and a half centuries, we know that this is not an end, it is just the beginning of America’s golden age.” Just before ending his speech, Trump also made a brief nod to the war with Iran, saying: “We tore Iran apart. They can’t wait to find a deal. They want a deal at all costs. We gave them a week off for the funeral, because we’re nice.” (Of Iacopo Luzi)
