Ukraine announces new attack on St. Petersburg and the Russian naval base in Kronstadt

Last night, Ukrainian forces launched an attack with drones against an oil terminal in the Russian metropolis of Saint Petersburg and against the annexed naval base of Kronstadt, as announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The governor of Saint Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, has confirmed the attack on the crude oil facilities located in the Kirovsky district but so far he has no record of injuries.

Russia has not yet commented on the attack in Kronstadt. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attacks on oil facilities and also claimed responsibility for an attack on Kronstadt, a naval base near St. Petersburg.

“The Ukrainian Defense Forces attacked port oil infrastructure, a source of income for Russia’s war, and there were also successful attacks against Kronstadt, an important military objective,” Zelensky said on social media.

In total, Russian air defenses shot down 72 drones overnight over the Leningrad region, bordering St. Petersburg, according to Governor Alexander Drozdenko’s post on Telegram. The region and city are home to several Baltic Sea ports crucial for Russian oil exports. There are no reports of casualties or damage, he stated.

St. Petersburg had already suffered a massive drone attack in early June, when the city was hosting President Vladimir Putin’s annual economic forum.

Ukraine’s intense attacks on Russian oil refineries and energy infrastructure in recent months have caused widespread fuel shortages. In recent days, about 90% of Russian regions have suffered gasoline supply problems.
