Crime: Two attacks in Berlin Park – police are investigating the connection

Within a few minutes, two men were attacked by unknown people in Berlin’s James Simon Park. The police are checking whether the crimes are related.

According to police, a 39-year-old was initially attacked shortly after midnight, allegedly because of his sexual identity. Several unknown people are said to have surrounded the man in the area of a public toilet and hit him in the face several times. He suffered facial injuries but refused treatment from paramedics.

Just a few minutes later, a witness observed a 19-year-old fleeing from a group of people from the park towards the Spree. The group caught up with him, pushed him to the ground and then allegedly punched him, kicked him and sprayed him in the face with pepper spray. The witness intervened, whereupon the suspected perpetrators fled. The 19-year-old was taken to hospital for further examination as a precaution.

It is currently unclear whether the attackers were the same in both cases. The investigation into the background and a possible connection between the two attacks is ongoing.
