EU: Benifei (Pd), ‘Commission acts on dynamic pricing’

The European Commission should “really act” to address the phenomenon of dynamic pricing, especially in its more opaque uses, in order to protect consumers. This was written in a note by Brando Benifei, MEP of the Democratic Party (S&D) and member of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee of the European Parliament, where today he held an event on the topic together with representatives of the European executive, institutions, consumer organisations, the music and football sectors, UEFA and the academic world as well as other MEPs.

“From the 2024 Oasis case to the 2026 FIFA World Cup tickets, sold for up to almost $10,000, including through an opaque use of dynamic pricing, European consumers have experienced practices that turn sport and music into a privilege,” says Benifei, underlining that the strategy has “legitimate applications in some sectors, but live events are not substitutable goods like a plane or a hotel room. This is why we ask the European Commission to really act to address this phenomenon.”

“In recent months we have reported several worrying episodes relating to the governance of FIFA under the presidency of Gianni Infantino. The Oasis 2024 case was the wake-up call, the FIFA World Cup 2026 was the confirmation and the imminent European legislation on digital equity was an opportunity to intervene and not to be wasted”, adds the MEP. “We cannot allow economic interests to prevail over the passion of millions of fans and enthusiasts”, he concludes.
