According to a media report, the German government sees this Russia behind the drone incident in Leipzig. Berlin plans to officially hold Moscow responsible for the attempted explosive drone attack in early August in the coming days, reports said the world on Sunday and the Politico portal on Saturday, citing “three people familiar with the process.” Accordingly, “extensive” measures should be announced at the same time.
According to the reports, it is a combination of direct measures by Germany and new EU sanctions. The announcement is therefore planned for the beginning of next week, parallel to the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Ireland on Tuesday. The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz could therefore also bring forward the decision.
On the evening of August 4th, a drone loaded with explosives was discovered at Leipzig Airport. There were several Ukrainian cargo planes near them. Leipzig Airport is considered a transshipment point for military aid deliveries for Ukraine in the defensive war against Russia. According to reports, several drones were used in Leipzig.
Public recrimination is imminent
Merz said in an RTL interview on Thursday that his government would soon name those responsible for the incident. The German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has so far only spoken of “foreign powers”.
