Meloni has the longest-serving government in republican Italy

“Today, our government becomes the longest-lasting in the history of the Italian Republic. It is a fact that I receive with gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility. Because stability is not a record to show off, but the condition that allows a nation to plan, decide, honor commitments and command respect”, wrote the Prime Minister in X.

“In these years, we have worked to increase employment, reduce unemployment, support families and businesses, strengthen security, manage public finances seriously and give Italy back weight and credibility on the international stage. The results are there, but we know very well how many things remain to be done”, added Meloni.

The prime minister has been in power since October 2022, leading a coalition formed by her party, the Brothers of Italy (FdI, in its Italian acronym), Lega, by Matteo Salvini, and Força Itália, founded by the late prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.

It was precisely Berlusconi that Meloni surpassed this Friday: with 1,413 consecutive days in office, the conservative prime minister surpassed the 1,412 days of the businessman’s second government, between 2001 and 2005.

Alcide de Gasperi, who was prime minister between 1945 (he began governing before the plebiscite that abolished the monarchy) and 1953, and Berlusconi himself, who governed between 2001 and 2006 (in addition to other periods), led governments in Italy for longer consecutive periods than Meloni has achieved now.

However, these periods were marked by cabinet and coalition changes, which is why they are not considered a single government – ​​unlike the Meloni administration.

In the case of Gasperi, although he governed uninterruptedly for almost eight years, it is considered that there were eight different administrations during that period.

Counting non-consecutive governments and mandates, Berlusconi is still the person who has governed Italy for the longest time since the creation of the republic, with 3,340 days in power.

Italy has had 68 governments in 80 years. Meloni has been defying this political instability and the FdI leads the polls for the 2027 national election.
