The President of Serbia will resign on September 25-26

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced that he will resign on September 25-26.

“I will resign as soon as I return from New York. … I think it will be on the 25th or 26th. That’s when I will resign, and then I will participate in the election campaign as an ordinary citizen, although the law does not oblige me to do so,” Vucic told reporters today, according to Tanjug news agency.

Earlier, the President of Serbia scheduled early parliamentary elections on October 25. He will lead the list of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party in the elections and become a candidate for the prime minister.

Vucic stated that no president has resigned to participate in the election campaign so far, and he wants to be the first to do so.

Vučić already served as Serbia’s prime minister from 2014-17. Since then, he has been elected president twice, and his term officially expires next year.

Serbia has been experiencing anti-government protests for the past two years, driven by youth. Still, Vucic is optimistic about his party’s chances of victory in the elections.
