UN launches investigation into crackdown on opposition protests in Iran

The UN Human Rights Council voted in favor of the creation of a special commission to investigate the Iranian government’s crackdown on opposition demonstrations. According to the text of the document, there are suspicions that the authorities violated human rights during the protests.

25 member states voted in favor of the resolution, while only six voted against it: Armenia, China, Cuba, Venezuela, Eritrea, and Pakistan. Among the 16 abstentions are India, Brazil, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia.

Iranian representative Khadija Karimi accused Western states of using the council to attack the Islamic Republic. She called the decision to create the commission outrageous and shameful.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken welcomed the decision. “It leaves no doubt that the council is aware of the seriousness of the situation in Iran. The commission will ensure that those involved in the suppression of popular uprisings are identified and their crimes are documented,” he said.
