“New York Times” reports: Russian division involved in massacre in Bucha

After months of research into the massacre in the western Ukrainian city of Bucha, the New York Times serious allegations against a unit of the Russian army. The US newspaper on Thursday published a 28-minute video with the background and the results of its investigation, alleging that paratroopers from the 234th Airborne Division were responsible for the deaths of dozens of civilians on Jablunska Street in Bucha.

According to Ukrainian sources, more than 460 bodies were found in the Kiev suburb of Bucha in April after the Russian military withdrew. The atrocities against the civilian population had caused horror around the world. Russia denies responsibility for the crimes and has said footage of the dead was fabricated.

Unarmed, children, fugitives

“Soldiers have interrogated and executed unarmed men of military age, and they have killed people who inadvertently got in their way – whether they were children fleeing with their families, residents looking for food, or people just trying to to ride home on their bikes,” she writes New York Timeswho also published a newspaper article on her research.

According to its own statements, the newspaper spent eight months interviewing residents, evaluating security camera footage and analyzing government documents that showed the responsibility of the Russian 234th Airborne Division for dozens of killings on Jablunska Street.

Phone records also showed that victims’ phones were making calls to Russia, in some cases just hours after the victims died. By comparing data from social networks and conversations with relatives, it was possible to prove that the callers were soldiers from the Russian parachute division.
