Libya, Meloni meets Haftar and confirms support for UN action

The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, met the strong man of Cyrenaica, the Libyan general Khalifa Haftar, at Palazzo Chigi for about two hours. Meloni confirmed his support for the UN action for the resumption of a political process that will lead Libya to presidential and parliamentary elections by the end of the year.

The conversation served for an exchange of views on some topics, in particular the unprecedented growth of the migratory phenomenon towards Italy.

Haftar arrived in Rome on Wednesday to continue the dialogue on stabilization in Libya and North Africa, while the premier was in Tripoli on 28 January.

The prime minister also took the opportunity to discuss destabilizing situations in Libya and neighboring countries, expressing particular concern about the conflict in Sudan.
