Ujedinile se Socijaldemokratska stranka i Demokrate Srbije

The Social Democratic Party (SDS) united today with the organization Democrats of Serbia.

SDS President Boris Tadic said the new organization would seek to unite the democratic potential of Serbian society and bring together citizens of the political center-left, and would advocate for workers ‘rights and citizens’ freedom.

Tadic said Serbia has been ruled by a “policy of aggression” for the past 10 years, adding that the fundamental difference is that Democrats have “liberated” citizens from fear, while the Serbian Progressive Party rules it.

He said the new organization remains open to talks on co-operation with the “democratic opposition”.

Speaking about his possible candidacy for the presidency of Serbia, Tadic said that it depends on his assessment of whether the offered candidates have the strength to “reform the system and correct the consequences of Aleksandar Vucic’s mandate.”

“I will also see that decision through the extent to which my candidacy opens the second round of elections (in the presidential elections). I approach this from the standpoint of general interest, and not personal victory,” he pointed out.

The organization of the Democrats of Serbia was founded last year by former officials of the Democratic Party.

The election assembly of the new organization, which is closed to the public, is still ongoing at the Madlenianum in Zemun.
