Yakov Yavno was born on May 27, 1947 in Minsk into a Jewish family. Graduated from the Music Academy named after. Gnesins (faculty of musical theater actors). He worked as a soloist at the Jewish Chamber Musical Theater in Moscow.
Emigrated to the USA. He studied at the Jewish Seminary of Columbia University, taking a course in chazanut (synagogue singing). Lived in New York.
