Anwar Gargash, adviser to the President of the United Arab Emirates, found it necessary to explain why the Emirates abstained from voting at the UN on a resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“We believe that supporting one side will only lead to more bloodshed. The UAE’s priority is to convince all parties to the conflict to find a diplomatic solution,” said Gargash, who previously headed the UAE Foreign Ministry.
Commented on the position of the Middle Eastern state and its representative in the UN Lana Nuseibe. “We are aware that the adopted resolution gives a signal of what needs to be done,” she said.
The Al-Arabiya TV channel quoted analyst Giorgio Cafiero as saying that the UAE is striving to balance between two emerging poles – Russian-Chinese and American-European. The leadership of the Emirates believes that the weakening of the United States in the region will lead to the strengthening of Russia and China.
