A container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday morning.

A large rescue operation is underway in the area, in which, according to the BBC, several different authorities are involved. The United States Coast Guard is also present.

The accident happened early Tuesday at around 1:30 local time.

At issue is the over 2.5-kilometer long Francis Scott Key bridge crossing the Patapsco River, according to the director of the rescue operation who commented on the situation to the Baltimore Sun, the entire bridge would have collapsed into the water.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge is an important traffic route in the area. Maryland officials have confirmed that all lanes are closed due to the crash.
