Washington and Brussels seek the withdrawal of the Russian military base and border guards from Armenia.  MFA of the Russian Federation

Russia considers the April 5th meeting between the Prime Minister of Armenia, the US Secretary of State and the President of the European Commission as an attempt to involve the South Caucasus in a geopolitical confrontation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry states in a statement that Moscow knows that Washington and Brussels are trying to achieve the withdrawal of Armenia from the CSTO and EAEU, the withdrawal of the Russian military base and border guards.

Declaring that the West wants to turn Armenia into an instrument for the implementation of its “extremely dangerous plans” in the South Caucasus, Moscow calls on Yerevan not to allow the West to deceive it and lead the country down the wrong path.

“We confirm our commitment to comprehensively deepen and expand relations with Armenia on the basis of the principles established by bilateral documents and agreements,” stressed official Moscow.

As for the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the problematic issues of both regional and bilateral nature in the South Caucasus should be resolved in accordance with the principle of “regional responsibility” that was “agreed on October 23, 2023 in Tehran” 3+3 “at the second meeting of the platform”.

“We call on the foreign players to respect these agreements, and the authorities of Yerevan to take into account the concerns of the neighboring states when building their foreign policy,” said the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

  • As a result of the meeting between Nikol Pashinyan, Ursula von der Leyen and Anthony Blinken, it was announced that Yerevan will receive 270 million euros from Brussels and 65 million dollars from Washington in the next 4 years. These funds will mainly be directed to the development of Armenia’s economy.
  • Even before the meeting, Moscow expressed its displeasure and concern regarding the tripartite meeting in Brussels.
  • Armenia’s relations with Russia and the CSTO intensified especially after the attack of Azerbaijan in September 2022. After not receiving support from the CSTO during the Azerbaijani invasions, official Yerevan announces that it is diversifying its security policy.
