At the same time, Jordan, like other countries, announced the closure of its airspace and suspended the operation of the airport in Rabat Ammon, at the same time as the closure of the airspace in Israel and the cancellation of flights from and to Tbilisi. Hours later, the airspace in both countries resumed operation and thus the flight schedule was renewed.
The Iranian news agency Fars warned the Jordanians tonight and threatened that “Jordan could become our next target if it takes any action in Israel’s favor.” Still, King Abdullah II was not deterred by Tehran’s threat and decided to side with Israel at the moment of truth.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi said this morning that “stopping the Israeli aggression in Gaza, ending the occupation and the two-state solution – the way to stop the escalation in the region. Jordan will continue to take all the necessary steps to protect its security and sovereignty. It will not allow anyone to reveal its security or the security of its people against any danger.”
Hours after the attack, the Jordanian government gathered for a meeting, and at the end issued a statement to the media in which it clarified: “We call on the various parties to exercise restraint, deal responsibly with the tensions in the region, without being dragged into any escalation that will undoubtedly have serious and dangerous consequences for international peace and security.”
“Our military forces will deal with everything that happens in the airspace and their territory. Some of the flying objects that penetrated our airspace last night – were intercepted to prevent them from endangering our citizens, there are fragments that fell in several places without causing any significant damage,” the Jordanian government clarified.
A Jordanian commentator emphasized: “If Iran really wanted to hurt and take revenge on Israel in a severe way, it would have ordered Hezbollah to launch 1,000 precision missiles at once to the north, center and south, paralyzing Israel militarily and economically in just 24 hours. But it chose this plan to save face , to show some muscle and move her nuclear portfolio forward.”
It is important to remember that the cooperation with Jordan comes at a tense time that is accompanied by angry demonstrations in which masses of Jordanians, most of them of Palestinian origin, have been holding near the Israeli embassy in Rabat Ammon for a month – as a sign of solidarity with Hamas. “Abu Obida, we are at your command, we are the people of Muhammad Daf,” they read there. However, this atmosphere did not prevent the kingdom from putting it aside this time, coming to its senses and demonstrating a stronger strategic partnership than ever.
