Bavaria: Suspected Russian spies arrested

The police has on Wednesday in Bayreuth two Suspected agents with ties to Russia arrested.

The two German-Russian nationals are strongly suspected of having worked for a foreign secret service in a particularly serious case, as the Federal Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice announced on Thursday.

The two German-Russians are said to have spied on US bases on behalf of Russia and planned attacks on military transport routes. The aim was therefore to torpedo Germany’s support for Ukraine.

First he had Spiegel reported about it. Were arrested Dieter S. (39) and his alleged helper Alexander J., 37 years old. Both are in custody and will be taken to the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe today.

Military installations spied on

Dieter S. is said to have agreed to carry out arson and explosive attacks on military infrastructure, arms factories or industrial sites. It should specifically affect transport routes on which military goods are transported. This was intended to torpedo German support for Ukraine.

Furthermore, the suspect S. is said to have spied on American military installations and produced images for his Russian clients. Since October 2023, the German-Russian is said to have maintained regular contact with contacts from the Russian secret service.

Alexander J., who was also arrested, is said to have supported S. in spying from March 2024 at the latest. Loud Spiegel-Information was also spied on a US military training area in Grafenwöhr, Bavaria, where the US Army, among other things, trains Ukrainian soldiers on Abrams main battle tanks.

The alleged main perpetrator, Dieter S., is no stranger to German security authorities: between 2014 and 2016 he is said to have belonged to a militia of the “Donetsk People’s Republic” proclaimed by Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. Dieter S. is therefore also accused of membership in a terrorist organization abroad.

The entity “Donetsk People’s Republic” is being investigated by the German judiciary Spiegel-Information now classified as a terrorist organization.

Justice Minister: Germany must react decisively

The German Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP) told the German Press Agency: “We know that the Russian power apparatus is also focusing on our country.”

Germany must respond to this threat defensively and decisively. With the arrest of the two men, the Federal Prosecutor General achieved “another significant investigative success” in the fight against the sabotage and espionage network of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
