At least two people died and three others were injured in an attack carried out this Friday (19) in Iraq by “unknown aircraft” against a base of the influential pro-Iranian Shiite paramilitary group Popular Mobilization, Iraqi sources in the security sector told EFE. security.

The attack targeted the Kalsu base, on the outskirts of the city of Babel, about 80 kilometers south of the capital Baghdad and which is home to Popular Mobilization fighters, as well as Iraqi military and police personnel, said the sources, who asked not to be identified and reported that the number of victims corresponds to a “preliminary assessment”.

An American government source told Reuters that the United States did not participate in the attack.

Popular Mobilization emerged from a set of armed groups, many of them close to Iran, which were later recognized by the Iraqi government as a formal security force.

Part of these groups carried out attacks against American targets in Iraq and Syria from the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip on October 7, due to the “unwavering” US support for Israel.

The United States responded with attacks against Popular Mobilization bases, which ceased the offensive against American targets in February.
