China offers to strengthen the Palestinian Authority and facilitate its reconciliation with other factions

The Government of China offered this Friday to contribute to any initiative that could strengthen the position of the Palestinian Authority and to facilitate any conversation between it and the rest of the factions, in a veiled reference to the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

The Palestinian Authority and Hamas, respectively in charge of the West Bank and Gaza, have been at odds for years over the constitution of a Palestinian unity government; a division that increased after the outbreak of war between Israel and the Islamist movement on October 7.

The veteran president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, has recently reshuffled his cabinet after the United States, through its Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, called to “revitalize” a structure that Hamas has denounced as ossified and absolutely incapable of exercise any government in the Palestinian territories.

In this sense, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin, assured this Friday that China will support “any exercise to strengthen the Palestinian National Authority” but will also support “all Palestinian factions in their commitment to reconciliation”, as an ally. declared of the same in their efforts to achieve an independent Palestinian State.

In fact, the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, assured last week that “the recognition of Palestine would represent the correction of a long historical injustice and a duty that all UN member states should fulfill,”

The minister added that such recognition, furthermore, “should not be the result of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, but rather a step to grant Palestine the same negotiating advantages in the face of a two-state solution” in coexistence with Israel.
