Hacker sentenced to many years in prison and fined millions by US court

A Ukrainian is in the US for his role in cyber attacks notorious hacker group Revil was sentenced to 13 years and seven months in prison.

The hacker also became Payment of $16 million (14.93 million euros) in compensation for his involvement in more than 2,500 so-called ransomware attacks, the US Department of Justice announced on Wednesday.

Deputy Attorney General Nicole Argentieri said the now convicted 24-year-old and his accomplices thousands of computers around the world hacked and encrypted them with ransomware. They then demanded ransom payments of more than $700 million and threatened to publish their victims’ data if they did not pay.

Revil’s attacks also included the spectacular and momentous ransomware attack on US software company Kaseya in 2021, which impacted numerous companies in at least 17 countries.

Revil hacker pleaded guilty

As a result of the attack, the Swedish supermarket chain Coop, among others, had to temporarily close the majority of its branches due to failed checkout systems. At the time, US President Joe Biden had not ruled out Russian involvement in the hacker attack.

The now convicted man was arrested in Poland in 2021 as part of a global operation against ransomware attacks. In 2022 he was extradited from there to the USA and confessed Conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering and guilty of damaging protected computers.

Russia said in January 2022 that it had broken up Revil at the request of the USA. (AFP)
