Ex-school principal from Saxony caught after escaping in Cambodia

A Former headmaster convicted of serious child sexual abuse from Saxony was caught in Cambodia more than a year after his escape. As the police in Görlitz announced on Monday, the 55-year-old was arrested in the Asian country at the beginning of March. He has been in custody in Dresden for three and a half weeks.

The former headmaster of a school in Mücka in the Görlitz district was sentenced to three years and one month in prison at the end of 2022 for serious sexual abuse of children. In May 2021, the accused abused a then 13-year-old student in the school library.

Schoolgirls had previously made similar allegations in 2016 and 2018. The proceedings were discontinued by the public prosecutor at the time due to a lack of evidence, but were reopened in the last case.

After the verdict, the man fled abroad. The former headmaster was arrested. According to police, the investigation uncovered information about flight bookings to Cambodia. Further research showed that he had apparently opened a guesthouse there.

Since it was not possible to extradite the convicted man from Cambodia to Germany, the investigators found another solution. When the 55-year-old’s visa in Cambodia expired, he was arrested by the local police on March 6th. He was later flown to Bangkok in Thailand, where officers from the Saxony State Criminal Police Office and the Görlitz Police Department took him over.
