Senior Hamas official says seizure of Rafah is attempt to “hinder implementation of deal”

Hamas delegation arrives in Cairo to continue indirect negotiations with Israel over Gaza

A senior official of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Osama Hamdan, assured this Tuesday that Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian side of Rafah, in the Gaza Strip, is a “predetermined” attempt by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, of “hindering the implementation” of the agreement.

“It is a desperate attempt to create a pseudo-victory that can save Netanyahu’s skin. This will never be achieved,” he said during a press conference held in Beirut in which he called this movement “a crime and a dangerous escalation against a civil installation under the protection of International Law”.

Hamdan has specified that the acceptance of the proposed agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as for the release of hostages by Palestinian prisoners, “has put Netanyahu in a difficult situation and has made him act hysterically, with statements that reveal a political defeat and a strategic loss”.

“The ball is now in Netanyahu’s court. His behavior and attitude after we announced our agreement reflects this criminal’s determination to thwart all attempts at mediation, including those of the United States, and expresses disregard for the lives of the captives , who are threatened every day by the bombings of the Israeli Army,” he stated.

In the same way, Hamdan has reiterated that “the ball is in the court” of the Biden Administration, which must “demonstrate its sincerity by putting pressure on the Netanyahu Government, as reported by the Qatari network Al Jazeera.

A Hamas delegation, led by Khalil al Haya, arrived in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, this Tuesday to continue indirect negotiations with Israel on a ceasefire in Gaza together with mediators from Egypt and Qatar.
