Throw oranges in the famous European Festival

The world famous orange throw battle was held annually in the town of Ivrea at the foot of the Alps of the Piedmont region, Italy. This activity is part of the long -standing Carnival festival in Ivrea, dating back to the Middle Ages, recreating the XIII century uprising to overthrow the tyrant and declared IVREA as a free state.

This year’s Carnival IVREA festival takes place from the beginning of March, many important rituals have taken place two months earlier.

The festival originates from a legend of the people’s uprising against the oppression of the aristocracy in the 12th century. Today, throwing oranges is considered an activity to recreate the spirit of the old uprising.

A participant in the festival carries a bucket of oranges, on the ground, the oranges fall to the ground in the battle, crushed by the flow of people.

The line of participants threw cam in Ivrea. The event attracted thousands of participants each year. In 2019, this event recorded nearly 25,000 people and tourists participating. In 2023, about 8,000 participants.

Participants are divided into two sides, the warriors on the carriage symbolize the aristocracy and pedestrians under the road representing the peasantry. They threw oranges at each other, recreating the historic battle in a vibrant and colorful way. Each year, hundreds of tons of oranges from Sicily Island are brought back to serve this festival.

Anyone can participate by registering to one of the nine teams throwing cam in the road or joining the cavalry on the horse -drawn carriage. If you just want to observe without being thrown oranges, visitors should wear a red phrygian hat – a wool hat shaped like a red socks, symbolizing the spirit of freedom and the uprising of the people against tyrant.

During the festival, those who wear red phrygian hats will be identified as the audience and are not thrown. The organizers encourage visitors to buy phrygian hats at the booths in the entrance to the old town to avoid becoming the target of the orange rains from the teams.

In order to be thrown oranges as members of the play team, participants need to pay about 25 euros (690,000 VND) and 75 euros (nearly 2.1 million) to buy compulsory costumes. For the audience, free entrance tickets on Monday and Tuesdays and Sundays cost 15 euros (415,000 VND).

The streets are flooded with oranges after the battle.

To ensure safety, the organizers encourage visitors to wear long clothes, wear anti -slip shoes because orange juice scattered everywhere.
