Warning to the target: fear of activity by Iranian groups

The United States has issued a new warning to visitors to Albania, in which it urges travelers to exercise increased vigilance. The background to the warning is the growing geopolitical tensions, which raises concerns about potential risks in the region. The announcement, published by the US Embassy in Tirana and effective a month ago, comes amid growing concern about the activities of groups with alleged ties to Iran. Although officials emphasize that there is currently no verified or immediate threat, the warning sharpens the need for high awareness, especially in public places that are tourist attractions.

According to the warning, groups affiliated with Iran may try to attack targets associated with the United States or Iranian opposition members staying in Albania. The authorities warn that such activity, if it occurs, could spill over into everyday places such as tourist sites, shopping centers, hotels, restaurants and nightlife centers.

The situation is closely related to the geopolitical position of Albania. The country has long hosted Iranian opposition groups, a fact that places it at the intersection of the broad international tensions between Iran and the US. This dynamic has led to a closer examination of the country’s security environment, even when there is no direct evidence of planning any attacks.

Despite the warning, the US State Department continues to classify Albania under “Level 2” (Exercise Increased Caution), recommending that visitors exercise caution. This definition reflects general concerns such as crime and limited enforcement capacity in certain remote areas, rather than a specific and credible threat. The authorities in Albania also acted to reassure the public, saying that there is no concrete intelligence indicating a real or immediate danger, while stressing that the country remains safe for both residents and tourists.

According to the recommendation, travelers are asked to remain attentive and informed during their visit. American officials recommend monitoring local developments, maintaining vigilance in crowded areas and avoiding large gatherings or demonstrations that could quickly escalate into violence. Taking simple precautions, such as ensuring available means of communication and relying on recognized services, may reduce potential risks.

The warning comes at a time when Albania’s tourism industry is experiencing significant growth. In 2025, the country hosted more than 12 million international visitors, a figure that reflects its rising popularity as an alternative to classic European destinations. Travelers are drawn to its dramatic scenery, from wild mountains to a coastline famous for its clear waters. Historic cities, archaeological sites and UNESCO World Heritage sites add to the country’s attractiveness, offering a rich cultural experience alongside natural beauty. Affordable prices have also played a key role in Albania’s tourism boom, attracting visitors looking for less crowded and more budget-friendly options compared to other European tourist destinations.

It is important to emphasize that the National Disaster Response Force classifies Albania under Travel Warning 1, meaning no unusual warning, and Israelis are asked to exercise basic vigilance. Also, while the American Travel Warning emphasizes the importance of caution, it does not suggest that travelers completely avoid visiting Albania.
