Apple unveiled several updates to its generative artificial intelligence (AI) system, “Apple Intelligence,” which integrates ChatGPT functions into its applications, including the Siri voice assistant, on iPhone. Users of recent Apple smartphones and tablets will have access to new tools to create imaginative emoticons in their image or improve writing messages. Those who own an iPhone 16 will be able to point their camera at their surroundings and ask questions to their phone.
Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence in June and is now starting to roll it out, two years after OpenAI launched the wave of generative AI with ChatGPT, which converses with users and produces content on demand. A notable change for the Californian company, which is very attentive to data privacy, is that Apple has collaborated with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into some functions and into its Siri assistant. Users of compatible devices thus have access to the AI model without leaving the Apple ecosystem.
The Cupertino group thus hopes to catch up with its Silicon Valley neighbors in generative artificial intelligence and with other smartphone manufacturers, such as Samsung and Google, which have already integrated similar AI functions into their Android phones. Apple is rolling out the updates to six English-speaking countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. The company plans to add support for 11 more languages over the next year.
