The Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reported this Wednesday that it has postponed the announcement of the nominations for the Oscars, in its 97th edition, from its original date (January 17) to January 19, and that has extended the voting period, due to the fires that are devastating the Californian city of Los Angeles, on the west coast of the United States.

“We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been affected by the devastating fires in Southern California. Many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you,” wrote the executive director of the Academy, Bill Kramer, in a letter to which the American television network CNN has had access.

During the day, several pre-Oscar events have been postponed or canceled, such as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) ‘Tea Party’, the American Film Institute (AFI) Awards luncheon and the Critics Choice Awards. for the “catastrophic fires ravaging Southern California.” The Writers Guild of America has also delayed announcing its award nominations.

There are already six active wildfires in Los Angeles County, which have claimed the lives of at least five people and forced the evacuation of around 130,000 people. The most recent fire that was activated was in the Hollywood district, threatening an area near the Walk of Fame.

In fact, the flames have burned the homes of several celebrities, such as that of actor Billy Crystal or businesswoman Paris Hilton, while many others have been evacuated, such as actress Jamie Lee Curtis or director Guillermo del Toro.
