HBL: Haisul’s picture was removed from the library exhibition in New York because it was considered racist

“The library announced that one of their honeymooners experienced Haisul as a potentially racist symbol. We decided to update the visual content of the exhibition,” Kråkström says in an interview with HBL.

Stink is one of the most famous side characters in Moomin stories. He is a small, anarchist and mischievous rogue who loves pranks and often causes harm to others.

Library spokesman Fritzi Bodenheimer confirms to HBL that one image was removed based on feedback.

“It was a curatorial decision to make sure that all visitors feel welcome,” Bodenheimer says.

Tove Jansson and the Moomins: The Door Is Always Open The exhibition presents both Moomin stories and Jansson’s role as a pacifist, humanist and queer artist in post-war Europe. There are mummy illustrations, archive material, texts and adventurous events.

The exhibition is open until September 30.
