Trump confirms the recognition of the Government of Venezuela after the restoration of diplomatic relations

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed this Saturday his recognition of the Government of Venezuela led by acting president Delcy Rodríguez after the United States and the country’s acting authorities agreed on Thursday to reestablish diplomatic and consular relations.

“I am pleased to say that this week we have formally recognized the Government of Venezuela. We have recognized it legally and we have also reached a historic agreement on gold,” Trump said in a speech to the main leaders of the Latin American right in Florida on the occasion of a summit against drug trafficking.

Trump has also celebrated a “historic” agreement on Venezuelan gold “to allow our two countries to collaborate and facilitate the sale of Venezuelan gold and other minerals.”

“They have large amounts of gold. Good lands. Very good lands. But they could not appropriate them. The system did not allow them to take advantage of the value of their lands,” in reference to the former authorities led by the now detained President Nicolás Maduro.

In fact, this Thursday, Rodríguez reiterated her Executive’s willingness to build a joint work agenda with the White House, during an event in which she was accompanied by the US Secretary of the Interior, Doug Burgum, and in which an agreement was formalized between the oil company Shell and the Venezuelan engineering company Vepica.

“It makes me very happy to have Venezuelan companies involved in the energy and mining agenda at an international level,” said the former ‘number two’ of Nicolás Maduro, imprisoned in New York since he was captured in early January in the United States attack against Caracas that left a hundred dead.
