EA shuts down BioWare, the studio that created Baldur’s Gate

Electronic Arts has decided to close BioWare, one of the most important studios in the history of video games, responsible for the creation of titles such as Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age e Mass Effect. The decision, announced as part of a reorganization of the American giant’s activities, puts an end to thirty years of activity by the Canadian software house. Along with the study, the new chapter of is also cancelled Mass Effectstill in the early stages of development.

The closure also concerns the headquarters in Edmonton, Canada, where BioWare was founded in 1995. The company explained that it wanted to concentrate resources and investments on a smaller number of projects, favoring productions considered more promising on a commercial level. According to Bloomberg, the restructuring will lead to around 400 job cuts at Electronic Arts, around fifty of which will be within BioWare.

Founded in 1995 by Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip, three Canadian doctors who were passionate about video games, BioWare helped transform the genre of computer role-playing games, bringing player choices, character relationships and the possibility of influencing the development of the story to the center of the narrative experience. Over the years it has stood out for its engaging stories, very inspired by role-playing games, conquering players all over the world.

Success came in 1998 with Baldur’s Gate, set in the fantasy universe of Dungeons & Dragons. The game, followed in 2000 by Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, became one of the main points of reference of the genre, influencing numerous subsequent productions and soon becoming an industry classic.

In the following years, the studio released other titles destined to leave their mark, including Neverwinter Nights in 2002 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic in 2003. With Mass Effect, published in 2007, BioWare built a science fiction universe in which the player’s decisions could also have consequences in subsequent chapters. That too was, in fact, a small revolution. Finally, in 2009, Dragon Age: Origins arrived, the first episode of another of its most appreciated and played series. Electronic Arts decided to buy BioWare in 2007 to aim for new segments and diversify its gaming offering. In recent years, however, the studio has gone through a difficult phase, marked by some releases that performed less than expected in terms of circulation and revenues.

New Mass Effect cancelled

Electronic Arts’ decision also interrupts development of the next one Mass Effecton which a small group of employees was working. In the message sent to staff, the company explained that it intends to concentrate its resources on a more limited number of large productions.

The reorganization instead involves the continuation of work on Marvel’s Iron Man and the next chapter of Star Wars Jedi. The company also announced a collaboration between Respawn and DICE studios for a new project and further investments in the Apex series. The closure comes after Electronic Arts came under the control of a consortium led by Saudi sovereign wealth fund PIF, along with Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, in a $55 billion deal completed in August 2026.

In a message published on its website, BioWare confirmed the end of its activities, recalling the worlds and characters created throughout its history and saying goodbye to the many fans who contributed to its success.

The closure does not represent the end of these series, whose rights and future developments follow different paths. In particular, Baldur’s Gate returned to global success in 2023 thanks to the third chapter created by Larian Studios, a company independent of BioWare. However, with the disappearance of the Canadian studio, a fundamental chapter in the history of role-playing video games closes, which for over three decades found some of their most influential examples in BioWare productions.
