More than 16,000 households affected: New environmental protection areas for Reinickendorf-Ost?

Since April 10th, approval requirements for structural measures such as modernizations, renovations or changes of use have been in effect for the Schäfersee, Teichstrasse, Breitkopf Becken and Hausotterplatz sub-areas. The aim of this step is to prevent displacement effects at an early stage and to maintain the social composition of the resident population.

The decision was based on an investigation by the district office, which, among other things, surveyed residents in the affected areas. These results were blended with data on average rental costs, average income and the number of net new rentals. The evaluation should be completed before the summer break, according to the district office.

If it becomes clear that a determination of the establishment of the area is necessary, the district council assembly will decide on the issue of a so-called social conservation ordinance, which would ensure that the environmental protection areas also exist in the future.

“The results of the previous investigations clearly show that we have to act in the affected areas,” explained the responsible district councilor Korinna Stephan (Greens). “We see high pressure for appreciation and at the same time a real danger that traditional tenants will no longer be able to keep their apartments.”
