Egypt is looking into generating electricity from the winds of Mount Galala

The Ministers of Transport, Electricity, and Renewable Energy of the Egyptian government conducted a joint visit to the region, to review the proposed sites and connect them to the national grid, while examining the integration of solar energy plants within wind projects to enhance efficiency and reduce costs, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

Ideal wind speeds at high altitudes in Egypt

The tour included an inspection of mountainous sites with altitudes ranging between 1,280 and 1,800 meters, where the areas recorded average wind speeds of about 15 meters per second, making them a suitable environment for producing electricity from wind.

The visit also extended to the proposed connection paths with the wind farms in Zaafarana, in addition to studying the electricity transmission lines and connecting them to the national grid in Egypt, in addition to evaluating the opportunities for integration between solar energy and wind energy in one location to maximize investment returns.

Strategy to increase the contribution of renewable energy to 45% in Egypt

The two ministers discussed ways to accelerate the implementation of renewable energy projects within Egypt’s plan to reach 45% of the energy mix by 2028, with a focus on reducing dependence on fossil fuels and enhancing the efficiency of natural resource management.

The statement of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy confirmed that exploiting Mount Galala comes within a broader strategic direction to benefit from natural resources, especially in the fields of wind and sun, in line with plans for energy transformation and sustainable development in Egypt.
