War in Iran: the US army runs out of new PrSM missiles in the middle of combat

A first use as noted as it is ephemeral. A US Army unit used PrSM (Precision Strike Missile) for the first time during its strikes against Iran. But in just a few weeks of fighting, she has already exhausted her entire stock.

“We pulled our entire supply of PrSMs from the start of the war, and we’ve already received more,” said Jimmy Arter, manager of transformation and lessons learned at the Fort Sill Fires Center of Excellence, as quoted by Aviation Week.

Precision missiles capable of hitting fixed and moving targets

The army had ordered 130 of these missiles before 2024 and 250 in 2025, notes the media specializing in defense. However, it is unclear how many were delivered before the start of the conflict in the Middle East.

Put into service two years ago, these missiles were still in the testing phase when they were used in Iran. The experience gained in combat, however, could make further testing now unnecessary.

Initially designed to replace aging ATACMS missiles, PrSMs have a greater range of up to 650 km. Equipped with a 90kg warhead and a reinforced GPS guidance system, these missiles are capable of hitting fixed targets. A recent version already ordered also allows them to engage moving targets.

Stocks should be quickly replenished, according to a US army official cited by Aviation Week. Last fall, manufacturer Lockheed Martin announced its intention to produce 400 ballistic missiles per year.

To achieve this, the company uses automated manufacturing processes, details the Ukrainian specialist site Militarnyi. A colossal $4.9 billion contract was even signed at the end of March to deliver 1,296 PrSM Increment 1 missiles by 2029.
