Google will penalize websites that disrupt the operation of the back button in the browser

This is a familiar phenomenon to every surfer: the user enters a certain page through the search results, but when he tries to go back, instead of reaching the previous page, he is transferred to another page within the same website. Sometimes it is a list of additional articles, and sometimes it is a pop-up window that tries to draw attention to more content or advertisements. In practice, the history of the browser is artificially changed, so that the button that should take the user back, takes him to a completely different place.

Google states that this is a direct violation of the users’ basic expectations. The back button is designed to perform a simple and clear action, returning to the previous page. Any deviation from this is seen as deception. The company even defines the behavior as part of a broader category of “malicious practices”, a term that includes actions that create a gap between what the user expects and what actually happens, and sometimes also violate privacy or security.

Google’s decision was not born in a vacuum. According to the company, the use of this technique is on the rise, especially on sites that depend on traffic from search engines. Each additional click translates into advertising revenue, so websites have a clear incentive to keep users within their system, even by means that obscure the surfer’s freedom of choice.

However, Google makes it clear that they are not creating a new rule, but are tightening the enforcement of existing rules. This means that sites that continue to use this technique may be flagged as spam, and compromised by both automated systems and manual checks. A drop in search ranking can lead to a sharp drop in the number of visitors, especially for sites whose traffic relies on organic searches.

The company gives a time window of about two months for websites to prepare for the change. During this time, website owners and developers are required to identify and fix the problem. In some cases it is code written specifically to carry out the hijacking, but in other cases the phenomenon is caused by the use of third-party libraries or external advertising systems that implement this behavior without the full awareness of the website owners.

The move is expected to affect not only small content sites, but also large platforms. There are well-known examples of services that redirect users back to an internal feed instead of the original page, an action designed to keep the user within the application or website. Now, even such behaviors may be re-examined in light of the strict guidelines.

Behind the decision is a broader trend by Google, an attempt to improve the quality of search results and strengthen user trust. In an age where competition for attention is intensifying, user experience has become a central element in website ranking. Google has already taken steps against other practices that are perceived as misleading, and now also includes the hijacking of the back button to the list.
