Wismar – After days full of arguments, urgent applications, threats and public pressure, there is now clarity in the case of whale Timmy. Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) has given the green light for the new rescue plan – and is relieved.
“Yes, at first I’m a bit relieved,” Backhaus tells BILD. “But of course everything is only good once it has been successfully completed. There is always a residual risk.” The new concept is “feasible” and “affordable” from the ministry’s point of view. Particularly important: “It is gentle on the animal and minimally invasive.” His innermost wish is “to successfully bring this wonderful creature to the Atlantic – at least to the North Sea.”

This is how the consultations for the rescue went
The past few days have been extremely stressful for the minister. In addition to technical criticism there were insults and even death threats. “I have never experienced anything like this in my life – and I don’t want to experience it again,” says Backhaus. He is particularly hurt when “politics is made on the back of this wonderful animal” without contributing constructive solutions.
On Monday evening, Backhaus sat in a video conference for three hours with the developers of the new rescue concept. “We made massive inquiries,” he reports. The answers came that night. Further details were available on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m., and the exact schedule was available by 12 p.m.
Timmy is getting worse and worse. Nevertheless, he should now be freed
“We are now combining all our strengths”
Now it’s all about the animal. “He deserves that we combine all our strengths again,” says Backhaus. We now know the exact structure of the Rescue work. And he promises: “We will stay with the animal 24/7.” He can be reached at any time, as can the fire brigade and police, who were also under great demand. Despite everything, Backhaus says he is also hearing a lot of encouragement from the country. “I am transparent, I care – not just about the whale, but also about the other problems we need to solve.” Now the hope lies in Timmy himself. “I hope he takes advantage of his chance.”
