Austrian NHL stars have to cancel the Ice Hockey World Cup

Three and a half weeks before the one that begins on May 15th in Zurich and Friborg Ice Hockey World Championship there is bad news for team boss Roger Bader and his team. The most important pillars of the team have to (partly due to injuries) cancel.

  • Marco Rossi suffered a fracture in his foot during the NHL season. The injury has not yet completely healed and the Vorarlberg native was not released by the Vancouver Canucks.
  • Marco Kasper also has injury problems. His Detroit Red Wings did not give the Carinthian the OK for the World Cup. The 22-year-old was one of the top performers at the World Cup in 2025 when Austria made it to the quarter-finals.
  • He also canceled before Thomas Rafflewho became a father for the second time. The 39-year-old is also a real leader.
  • Vincent Rohrer was sent from Montreal to the AHL farm team after Zurich’s playoff exit. Rohrer lost 2-4 with the Laval Rocket against the Toronto Marlies, but was involved in both of the Rockets’ goals.
  • David Reinbacher is still in use in the NHL. His Montreal Canadiens started the play-offs with a 4-3 overtime win against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Reinbacher was not used this time.
  • There is still a question mark over the use of Bern Legionnaires Benjamin Baumgartner. The 25-year-old is still convalescent after an operation.

The next friendly match will be against the Czech Republic in Vienna on Thursday.

Austria is playing in the World Cup Group A in Zurich. Opponents are the USA (No. 2 in the world rankings), Switzerland (3), Finland (7), Germany (8), Latvia (11), Hungary (18) and Great Britain (19). The best four teams advance to the quarterfinals. The last one gets off.
