The Venice Art Biennale must expect EU funding to be canceled due to the planned reopening of the Russian pavilion. “Russia’s return to the Venice Biennale is morally wrong and the EU intends to cut its funding,” chief diplomat Kaja Kallas said after an EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg. While Russia is bombing museums, destroying churches and trying to erase Ukrainian culture, it should not be allowed to exhibit its own culture.
Russia had previously declared, in coordination with the Biennale Foundation, that it would take part in the world-famous contemporary art exhibition again this year and that its pavilion would be filled with works by local artists. Ukraine, but also numerous politicians from EU countries, are protesting against it.
Russia’s participation in the exhibition, which begins on May 9, would be the first since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. At the previous two biennials, the Russian pavilion was not used by Russia: in 2022, the planned artists withdrew at short notice in protest against the attack on the neighboring country. In 2024, Moscow gave the building to Bolivia.
According to previous information from Brussels, the EU Commission is currently providing the Biennale Foundation with a total of two million euros over a period of three years. This helps support film producers and immersive technology.
