Machado, autobiography and politics in his book “Freedom Manifesto”

After the release in the United States on April 21st, it also arrives in Italy ‘The Freedom Manifesto. Winner of Nobel Peace Prize 2025 and central figure of the Venezuelan democratic resistance, Machado signs a volume that intertwines autobiography, direct testimonies and political reflections, offering an intense and personal story of the challenge to authoritarianism and the prospects of a democratic transition in his country

A story between autobiography and politics

Machado intertwines the autobiographical story with a wide-ranging political reflection, reconstructing his own human and civil path and, at the same time, giving voice to an entire community marked by decades of dictatorship, violence and repression. The Freedom Manifesto was born both as a act of denunciation but also as an appeal to individual and collective responsibility, based on the idea that every great change starts from choices that may appear minimal, but are capable of generating profound and lasting consequences.

The origins of political commitment

The book opens with the story of author’s personal storywhich focuses on the events that pushed her to enter politics and openly challenge the regime of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro.

The meaning of freedom and democracy

Subsequently, Machado proposes a reflection on the very meaning of freedom and democracy, clarifying how the future of Venezuela cannot be limited to the restoration of a democratic past, but must be based on the construction of a new State, aware of the abuses suffered and capable of inextricably linking responsibility, participation and civil rights.

The testimonies of Venezuelan citizens

In the second part, however, there is space for the testimonies of Venezuelan citizens who paid a very high price for resisting the regime. Stories of persecution, prison, torture and exile which become, in Machado’s story, concrete examples of courage and hope.

The ending between Nobel and future scenarios

Finally, the volume ends with the acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize and with an update on the most recent developments of the Venezuelan crisis, opening a reflection on future scenarios and the complex processes of political, social and economic reconstruction that await the country.
