Poland announces “drone army” to protect Europe

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday announced a strategic plan to develop a state-of-the-art “drone army” that will leverage Ukraine’s military experience to strengthen the security of the country’s airspace and, more broadly, the European Union (EU) against the growing threat from Russia.

The project was presented during the Paths to Reconstruction of Ukraine conference, held in Rzeszów (eastern Ukraine).

According to the Polish leader, this “army” of drones will consist of a modern and extensive fleet of unmanned systems designed to protect Polish and European airspace from air attacks.

For the plan to get off the ground, Poland will invest part of the amount needed for the initiative and has asked the EU to finance another part, as the bloc will also benefit from the agreement.

During his speech, Tusk addressed the reconstruction of Ukraine, warning that “there will be no reconstruction if the aggressor does not stop this war”, referring to Russia, and making economic recovery conditional on “guaranteed” military security.
