Olise’s former coach in an interview: “He seems to come from a different era”

Not everything about video calls is bad. One advantage: screens can be shared. “Look here,” says Veljko Paunovic, 48, currently Serbia’s national coach, towards the end of the conversation with SZ and conjures up charts and plans on the monitor. They are documents from the 2020/21 season, when former striker Paunovic became the first professional coach of FC Bayern super striker Michael Olise at the then English second division club FC Reading. Paunovic also plays a scene from Munich’s current Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid: 28th minute, Bayern’s corner kick, but this creates a counter-attack opportunity for Real. Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé switches on the turbo, but Olise works tirelessly against it. With an intelligent run across the entire pitch, he shadows Mbappé and blocks every passing opportunity to him.
