Thirty years ago, the engineer and lucid scientific disseminator Tomás Unger evoked in the pages of El Comercio the first thirty years of a singular institution, born from an intuition ahead of its time. Today, after six decades of existence of the Regional Seismology Center for South America (Ceresis)it is not enough to commemorate: it is necessary to understand, in all its depth, the historical, scientific and moral dimension of his legacy, and pay him a tribute that lives up to his silent greatness.
Hence, one of the most significant advances in this new stage has been the creation of a platform aimed at determining the seismic vulnerability of homes, a tool that translates decades of accumulated knowledge into a concrete instrument at the service of society. This effort, together with the intense work of disseminating knowledge through conferences, international meetings, academic programs and training spaces, reveals an institution that does not retreat into its history, but rather projects its knowledge towards transformative action.
Hence, one of the most urgent challenges of our time is to preserve, organize and democratize this heritage. It is not only about preserving documents, but about activating a scientific memory that allows us to anticipate, plan and respond. The digitization of historical archives, the construction of accessible platforms and the opening of knowledge to the scientific community, public institutions and citizens constitute today a natural extension of the founding mission of Ceresis.
In a world going through multiple crises—conflicts that despise life, inequalities that fracture societies, and an overabundance of information that often replaces understanding—the existence of Ceresis It acquires a meaning that transcends the technical. It represents the persistence of an ethic: that of cooperation versus fragmentation, that of shared responsibility versus indifference, that of memory versus forgetting.
Ceresisover sixty years, has sustained that way of understanding science: as a common good, as an instrument of integration, as a tool to protect the most valuable thing we have.
However, this tribute cannot be complacent. Reality challenges us harshly. South America continues to be highly vulnerable; cities that grow without planning, regulations that are not always met and a culture of prevention that has not yet fully taken root. In this scenario, the knowledge accumulated by Ceresis It cannot remain a passive legacy: it must become action, education and collective consciousness.
Peru will continue to be a seismic country. South America will continue to be a region of high tectonic activity. That condition is immutable. What can—and must—be transformed is our way of facing it. And in that transformation, each preserved data, each study carried out, each historical record acquires incalculable value.
Celebrating these sixty years is, therefore, not a protocol act. It is an act of recognition and, above all, responsibility.
In the apparent stillness of our cities, in the carefree routine of daily life, the possibility of movement always lies latent. Ceresis He has dedicated six decades to studying this invisible movement, to decipher its patterns, to warn of its risks. But, in a deeper sense, his greatest contribution has been another: teaching us that the true stability of a society does not reside in the immobility of the earth, but in the solidity of its knowledge and the capacity of its institutions to act before tragedy occurs.
