“The narrative that I cheated is just not true”: the actor opens up about the breakup with Sabrina Carpenter

Almost a year and a half after it became known about the surprising separation of Sabrina Carpenter (26) and Barry Keoghan (33), the Irish actor who was nominated for an Oscar is now referring for the first time to the serious accusations against him, which flooded the network at the time, according to which he cheated on the star.

In the last episode of Benny Blanco’s podcast, Friends Keep SecretsKeoghan directly addressed the narrative that accompanied his and Carpenter’s December 2024 breakup — after a year of photogenic dating. The actor, who chose to go under the radar after the end of the relationship, said in the episode that “there was a narrative out there that was never really talked about, a narrative that is not true, and I never confirmed or said anything about it.” Later, when asked to clarify what he meant, Keoghan said without hesitation: “Yes, that I cheated.”

Keoghan, who told how managing a relationship in the public eye is a complex business, revealed the source of the alleged malicious rumors about him; A video by a certain content creator, who claimed to have been with him, spread the story that he was unfaithful to Carpenter – a rumor that spread its wings, “amplified” and got out of control according to the audience. The same content creator, against whom he chose not to go public in order not to expose her to shaming on the networks, later apologized and even admitted in the documentation she uploaded that she made up the story. But according to Carpenter’s ex, “no one was caught on that video” as much as they were on the original lie. Later, he already chose to lose coming to the events and disconnect from the networks.

The relationship between the two began in December 2023 and quickly became one of the most talked about in the world, including Keoghan’s appearance in the music video for the song Please Please Please Carpenter’s. Despite reports of on and off, they were considered a stable couple who supported each other at ceremonies and on tour, until the decision to part ways.

Today, Keoghan comes out against what he calls a “terrible culture” of trying to drag people down to his words without facts, especially as someone dealing with complex past experiences and dealing with trauma – his mother died at just 32, when he was 12, as a result of heroin use, while he himself dealt with life-threatening health diagnoses and drug addiction. “I’m asking people to stop making assumptions and stop jumping on this narrative and attacking me,” he said in the episode.
