Two spiritual temples at the foot of Ngang Pass

Ngang Pass is about 250 m high above sea level, is the boundary between Quang Tri and Ha Tinh provinces on the Hoanh Son range. This place is famous in poetry, typically the song “Over Ngang Pass” by Mrs. Huyen Thanh Quan.

At the foot of the pass there are two temples worshiping Princess Lieu Hanh. According to legend, she is the second daughter of the Jade Emperor, named Quynh Hoa. During her third incarnation, she chose this place to reside and open a restaurant.

Here, she transformed into a saleswoman serving passersby. During her lifetime, she helped native people avoid epidemics, ward off wild animals and taught how to grow rice. The land at the foot of the pass gradually becomes rich and densely populated. To remember their gratitude, people on both sides of the pass set up temples right next to the North-South Thien Ly road.
