UAE accuses Iran of terrorism against state oil tanker

“Attacking commercial ships and using the Strait of Hormuz as a means of economic coercion or blackmail constitutes an act of piracy by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

According to the ministry, the case constitutes a flagrant violation of Security Council Resolution 2817, which highlights freedom of navigation and prohibits attacks on commercial vessels or the interruption of international maritime routes. The note does not detail the location where the tanker was hit.

Earlier on Monday, UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which monitors the safety of ships and sailors around the world, issued a warning about another attack on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.

The statement said that an unidentified projectile hit a vessel on Sunday (3) approximately 144 kilometers north of Fujairah, in the United Arab Emirates. An Iranian Revolutionary Guard ship was spotted in the area.

Also on Monday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard published a new map that shows areas of the Strait of Hormuz that are controlled by the regime. The drawing shows a line connecting Mount Mubarak, in Iranian territory, to the city of Fujairah, in the United Arab Emirates, east of the strait, while the region west of the passage, which stretches from the Iranian island of Qeshm to the Emirati city of Umm al-Quwain, would be under Iranian control.

The new attack report comes after three weeks of ceasefire between the US and Iran, which maintain a selective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz while trying to negotiate an agreement to end the war.
