Chief State Attorney Ivan Come backć he said that the extradition procedure for Vedran Pavleka runs according to the regulations of Kazakhstan, where the former fugitive head of the Croatian Ski Federation is located. “He was sentenced to extradition detention for 40 days, and this is a procedure that must be respected. Pavlek has the right to appeal the decision made by the competent Kazakh body,” Turudi said. at the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the “Dr. Franjo Tuđman” University of Defense and Security.
Turudić commented on articles in the media according to which he is a journalist Ivan Blažičko received money in cash from Pavlek for the transmission of one of the ski races in Sljemen.
Asked if the law is violated if money is received in cash, Turudić replied that “it does not mean automatic criminal prosecution”.
The Interpol warrant against Pavlek, suspected of embezzling almost 30 million euros from the Ski Association, was issued at the end of March, and his arrest in Kazakhstan was confirmed on May 1 by the Minister of Justice, Digital Transformation and Administration Damir Habijan.
According to previously published information, after leaving Turkey via Dubai, Pavlek ended up in Kazakhstan, where the court in Almaty sentenced him to 40 days of pre-trial detention after he opposed extradition to Croatia.
In the meantime, items seized from Pavlek in Turkey arrived in Croatia by diplomatic mail, including six mobile phones, 25 bank cards, a laptop, ten USB devices, an external hard drive and a notebook with a code, which are now in Uskok.
When asked whether the Croatian prosecutor’s office has the capacity to analyze all the documents received in the case against Pavlek, Turudić answered that the wordč about the demanding work that will be performed by the professional services of the prosecutor’s office.
Asked about the information contained in those documents, Turudić answered that they “certainly have knowledge, and after some time they will also have evidentiary knowledge”.
Turudić also touched upon the recently published report on the work of the DORH, according to which the Prosecutor’s Office has more cases resolved than received.
”I’m proud of that. We stopped the negative trend of the increase in the number of pending cases, and now that trend is going in the opposite direction, that is, towards reducing the number of pending cases,” he added.
The Chief State Attorney was also asked whether it is realistic to resolve all cases within the given time frame.
“Zero pending cases is unrealistic because it would mean that we are prosecuting exactly what is obvious, and that is not good,” he said.
