Benifei (Pd): ‘EU, enough words about minors in the digital world, we need facts’

“The words of President von der Leyen this morning – she said – are important and I fully agree with the message: children are not commodities and the rules for Europeans are decided by themselves, not by the big technology companies. The direction is clear, but now we need concrete actions, not just declarations”. It’s fine, he continued, “to take new initiatives but for many problems the tools to deal with them are already there: the Ai Act regulation provides for applicable measures against the manipulation of minors, the Digital Services Act imposes precise obligations on platforms”.

“What lacks – he continued – it is one quick application and with sufficient political coverage, adequate resources for control authorities and real coordination between national and European levels”. And, he added, “it is not enough to deal only with regulating social media, artificial intelligence is at the center of the risks for minors today. Europe has the means and the world is looking to us, it’s time to really use them“, he concluded.
