School holidays will be able to be adjusted regionally

However, at regional level, authorities will still be able to decide whether or not to adjust the schedule depending on local circumstances.

Because of the World Cup, the Mexican Ministry of Education brought forward the start of the summer holidays by more than a month last week. This would have extended the school holidays for over 24 million students in the Latin American country to a total of almost three months. This step was justified by the World Cup and the high temperatures in some regions.

The mayor of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, had previously called for school to be canceled during World Cup match days and for employees to work from home in order to prevent traffic jams and overloading of local public transport.

Mexico is hosting the 2026 World Cup together with the USA and Canada. Mexico and South Africa will meet in the opening game at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City on June 11th. A total of 13 World Cup games will be played in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
