A collaboration project has been launched in Bergamo between Amazon, Aganova and Uniacque which uses artificial intelligence and AWS cloud services to monitor the main pipelines in the province. The technology used is based on acoustic leak detection: through advanced sensors and machine learning algorithms, the system identifies sound anomalies in the flow of water, locating the breaking points in large pipes with millimeter precision. It is estimated that the initiative will save around 200 million liters of water annually, an amount equivalent to the needs of 1,300 families, with constant monitoring guaranteed for the next ten years.

The effectiveness of water savings will be certified through the methodology Volumetric Water Benefit Accountingconfirming how the digital transition of physical infrastructures is now an indispensable pillar for the sustainability of territories and the mitigation of water scarcity.
This approach fits into AWS’ broader Water Positive strategy, a global commitment to return more water to communities than they consume in their operations by 2030, with the goal of returning more water to communities than they consume for their global operations.
This path, which was 53% completed at the end of 2024, is based on a three-pillar operating model: the optimization of efficiency in the use of resources, the recycling of water for cooling systems and the financing of interventions for territorial water replenishment. In this context, technological projects such as the one implemented in Bergamo play a fundamental role, acting directly on the repair of infrastructure to eliminate waste from the network.
Globally, Amazon is extending this commitment through over 45 regeneration projects which, once fully operational, will ensure the recovery of 18 billion liters of water every year. The roadmap has specific deadlines, such as the achievement of the target in India already by 2027, and is part of a broader environmental vision linked to the Climate Pledge, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2040. At the same time, the company supports the protection of natural ecosystems through the Right Now Climate Fund, a $100 million fund dedicated exclusively to collaborative interventions for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity on a global scale.
