Apple has officially released iOS 26.5, an update which, while not yet integrating the expected evolutions of Siri expected for release 27, introduces significant structural changes for privacy and interoperability. The most significant change concerns the RCS standard, which now supports end-to-end encryption in conversations between iPhone and Android devices. This implementation guarantees a level of security comparable to that of iMessage, ensuring that messages exchanged between different platforms remain protected. The function, active by default and indicated by a padlock in the Messages app, however requires that both participants use a telephone operator compatible with the latest protocol specifications.
In strict compliance with the Digital Markets Act, iOS 26.5 introduces substantial innovations limited to the territory of the European Union, breaking down some historic barriers in the Apple ecosystem. Third-party wearable accessories can now access features previously reserved for Apple Watch and AirPods. Among these, quick pairing via proximity, management of Live Activities and interaction with notifications stand out. European users therefore have the possibility of replying to messages directly from competing smartwatches, although activating this function involves the automatic deactivation of notifications on any connected Apple Watch.
The Maps application is updated with the “Suggested Places” function, which suggests destinations based on recent searches and local trends, while the system code lays the foundations for the introduction of advertisements, which are not yet visible at the moment. The update package also includes the Pride 2026 Brightness wallpaper, new options for selectively transferring attachments to Android, and the addition of the Inuktitut language keyboard. In terms of stability, the update fixes over fifty security vulnerabilities, making the installation appropriate to maintain the integrity of the system and personal data.
